What Is a Prediction Market? A Beginner's Guide

What is a prediction market?

A prediction market is a place where people trade on the outcome of a future event. Instead of buying shares in a company, you buy a position on a question like "Will Nigeria qualify for the World Cup?" or "Will inflation fall this quarter?"

Every question has two sides: YES and NO. The price of each side moves between 0 and 1 (think of it as 0% to 100%), and that price is the crowd's live estimate of how likely the event is. If YES trades at 0.72, the market is saying there's roughly a 72% chance it happens.

That's the whole idea: prices are probabilities, set by people putting real money behind their judgement.

How it works on Tradebanta

On Tradebanta, every market is a simple YES/NO question about a real-world event. Here's the flow:

1. Pick a market. Browse sports, politics, entertainment, the economy and more. 2. Choose your side. If you think the event will happen, buy YES. If you think it won't, buy NO. 3. Pay the quoted price. Prices move with demand, so popular outcomes cost more and unpopular ones cost less. 4. Win ₦/$1 per unit if you're right. When the event settles, the winning side pays out in full and the losing side expires worthless.

You never need to wait for settlement, though. If the price moves in your favour — say you bought YES at 0.40 and it's now trading at 0.65 — you can cash out early and lock in the difference. Trading out before settlement is a core part of how people use prediction markets.

A worked example

Imagine a market asking: "Will the Super Eagles win their next match?"

  • YES is trading at 0.45, so the crowd gives them a 45% chance.
  • You've watched the squad news and think they're being underestimated, so you buy YES worth ₦1,000.
  • At 0.45 per unit, your ₦1,000 buys roughly 2,222 units.

Now three things can happen:

  • They win. Each unit pays ₦1, so your position settles at about ₦2,222 — more than double your stake.
  • The odds move before kick-off. The star striker is declared fit and YES jumps to 0.70. You cash out early at about ₦1,555 — a tidy profit without waiting for the final whistle.
  • They lose or draw. Your YES units expire, and you lose the ₦1,000 you staked.

The same mechanics apply whether you're trading in naira or dollars — Tradebanta lets you hold and trade from both an NGN wallet and a USD wallet, and you can switch between them anytime.

What can you trade on?

Prediction markets cover almost anything with a clear, verifiable outcome. On Tradebanta you'll find markets across:

  • Sports — match winners, tournament outcomes, season-long questions
  • Politics — elections, policy decisions, appointments
  • Entertainment — awards, chart-toppers, big premieres
  • Economy — inflation prints, rate decisions, currency moves
  • Community and culture — the debates everyone is already having

If people are arguing about it, there's probably a market on it — and the price tells you what the crowd actually believes, not just what's loudest on your feed.

Why crowd prices often beat pundits

When people put money behind an opinion, they tend to think harder about it. Prediction markets aggregate thousands of these judgements — new information gets priced in within minutes, not news cycles. That's why market prices are often more accurate than polls, pundits, or any single expert: the crowd is continuously voting with its wallet, and being wrong has a cost.

This doesn't mean the crowd is always right. Surprises happen — that's exactly why underdogs sometimes pay so well. The point is that the price is the best current summary of everything everyone knows.

Getting your winnings out

When a market settles in your favour, your winnings land in the wallet you traded from — naira or dollars. From there you can:

  • Withdraw NGN to your verified Nigerian bank account, or
  • Withdraw USD through the supported payout options in your region.

Your full trading history, open positions and transaction records live in your portfolio, so you always know exactly where your money is.

Getting started

1. Create your free account — sign up takes a minute. 2. Fund your wallet — deposit in naira or dollars, whichever suits you. 3. Start small. Pick a market you genuinely follow, take a small position, and watch how the price reacts to news. 4. Learn as you go. Our [Learn lessons](/learn) cover pricing, probability and strategy in bite-sized reads, and the [crowd intelligence guide](/blog/crowd-intelligence-explained) goes deeper on why market prices work.

An honest word on risk

Prediction markets involve real money, and positions can lose value — including everything you staked. Never trade money you can't afford to lose, start small while you learn how prices move, and treat early cashouts as a tool, not a guarantee.

Trade what you know.

Now put what you just learned about what is a prediction market to work.
